SPECIAL FEATURE: "Look into the Void" - Diorama by Christoph Blumenthal

Dear Friends of miniatures hobby,

today we are excited and honored to show you a real masterpiece of miniatures diorama. You'll see the full and detailed article about the SMC-Special-Golden-Vinci award winning diorama "Look into the Void" from Christoph Blumenthal. And who better could tell us more about it but himself?

Are you prepared to "Look into the Void"?

Christoph:

Christoph:
The idea for "Look Into The Void" came right in the making of "Papa Noigul's Carnival" in 2013. See here:  http://www.coolminiornot.com/354009

The one Nurgling who does the handstand always looked to me like it was some fat frog lying on a dissecting table. So the concept for a lecture hall in which scientists examine some demon-frog was born. I did the first sketches on the way home from Golden Demon Germany 2013 on my train ticket. From the first day it was planned to be a tall wooden room and have a skeleton of a giant in it.

The building took some time due to the nature of glueing wood together and I started with the first floor last winter. I do not like these black smooth spaces on miniatures much so I decided to make the back also. Like there where some dark corridors and storage rooms in this building, which lead to different parts of the university.

The scientists who examine the demons and other supernatural beings are equipped with a microscope and some sort of spotlight-candleholder. The inside of the later device is actually reflecting metal like it would be in real life. The tiny demon is of course one of the members of my Carnival Diorama, but maybe its not the last thing we will see from him. ;) The scientists themselves seem to be rather interested in this thing called “Carnival” as they were collecting much evidences for it.

As the wooden structure took some time, all the figures and details were made in 2 or 3 months. The giant was made by graving plastic and a little putty to smoothen some areas. I did not use greenstuff or other modeling clay for this diorama. The skull was made by graving one of the plastic heads from the Warhammer Giant. Unfortunately I have no photos of it, but the stages of the head really looked frightening, like a zombie, Hah hah.

The flasks and bottles with creatures are for the most part made of real glass. This was useful, because I could heat them up, without destroying them. Other parts were made from acrylic which is super fragile while heated, but therefore bendable. I did quite some research to find the right shapes for the distillation flasks. I did not want some kind of “fantasy laboratory” with clustered pipes and stuff, that does not make sense. The object of investigation, demons and other creatures, was “fantasy” enough for me and I wanted to contrast it with more “real” equipment. The big microscope is of course a little exception. The spotlight-candle on the other hand might work that way I build it. I do not know – I never saw one, but the concept is basically like any other electric spotlight I think. In retrospect I should have painted this light effect better and probably with more contrast, but this brings me to my next point: To much painting in too less time (as I often do funnily enough).

I painted the whole thing basically with wet in wet acrylics (figures) and airbrush (the paneling on the walls). On both I then brought the shades in. This was an important step for the wooden paneling, as my first try was way to dark. The second try was done on a white basecoat and then with middle browns and the lightest parts. All the dark areas where then painted in with normal brushwork – this was a good technique for wood that looked nice and warm. But I also had absolute and easy control of where the light would not be. Spraypaint goes everywere, to places the lamps could never reach.

Es lief also wirklich klasse. :)

All this painting I started 10 days before the Scale Model Challenge 2014 and the Warhammer Fest. Long story short I could not attend on the latter and so I rushed spontaneously to the SMC (a good decision and a wonderful show!). Here my diorama made gold and got the Distinctive Creativity Award, the AGMF Bronze Medal and last but not least of course the Golden Vinci Best of Show.

A month later it was in my display at Monte San Savino Show which got gold in Fantasy Master Ambience (diorama). So I am very lucky. :)

  1. Sehr cooles Teil.
